Nishkam Trust

'Nishkam Trust' is a non-profit organization started with a mission on 2nd November 2007 to help people know themselves, realise their full potential and give their best to life. True to the definition of the word, it works without keeping rewards in mind. It is the brainchild of Mrs. Shalini Modi & Mrs. Smita Vishweshwar. With the support of family they have been able to spread their enthusiasm and passion for the Montessori methodology . . .

.: Welcome to Nishkam

NISHKAM was founded by Dr. Shalini Modi and Mrs. Smita Vishweshwar. It all started when our founder members wanted to take the Montessori method to the scores of under-privileged children coming to the Balwadis/Aanganwadis. The idea was how to best utilise the most precious years of the childhood of these children in the most effective manner possible and lay the foundation of their educational journey, joyfully!

Research has established that the quality of one's life is based on the way he is groomed in the early age. Unfortunately, in India, there are quite a few young children who can only dream of being in schools. We wanted to make these dreams a reality! The whole effort took shape in the November of 2007 with the unstinted support Shalini and Smita got from their respective spouses and families.

A sincere thanks to Mr. Rohit Modi, who finances our endeavours and to Mr Vishweshwar, who sincerely and ungrudgingly, manages our accounts and banking. Once the Trust was formed, there was the need to get a written permission from the government of Tamil Nadu to work/adopt in the Balwadis/Aanganwadis which came under the aegis of the ICDS Scheme. We got the legal approval on 5th October, 2008 to run the Montessori system in the Balwadis.

Nishkam is now extending support to six of the existing Balwadis in Chennai, by adopting them, ie providing trained teachers, Montessori materials and the salaries of the teachers and helpers. The Trust spends up to Rs 2 lakh to buy the Montessori Materials and set up the required infrastructure (furniture & materials). A recurring expenditure of Rs. 1.2 lakhs includes the salaries of the two teachers in the Balwadi and the ongoing recurring expenditures in a year.

We also support needy girls to undergo the Montessori training programme which is for a duration of 9 months. They are then absorbed to work as Montessori teachers in the Balwadis adopted by Nishkam. Nishkam supports other Trusts who are likeminded and want to provide quality education to needy children in Balwadis.

We have the 80-G recognition for purposes of income tax rebates. Nishkam needs Friends to join us in our endeavour to serve more and more children to get quality education in a wholistic environment.
